How do I portray this character in a story i'm writing?

I'm writing a story, and in the story, my main character is a hit-man, and he has been hired to kill the heir to a criminal empire. my main character is very experienced at his job, so I'm wondering how I portray him to be both very good at his job, and yet still justify his capture by the criminal organization. any ideas or help is greatly appreciated
