What happened to the Confederate after the Civil War ended?

most of the political leaders either went into hiding, given amnesty or hung. The confederate state of america broke up with a bunch of rag tag confederate loyalists lying aroung here and there but the union did something called restoration. I believe lincoln called it reconstruction but after he got shot, johnson took over and called it restoration if im correct.
